Diablo fans heave a sigh as teased announcement turns out to be K-Pop collaboration- ‘Consider me whelmed’-

A tweet from Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson drove fans into a speculative froth recently. Posting on May 31, one day in advance of Diablo 4’s early access launch, Fergusson seemed to coyly suggest that Blizzard had one more big trick up its sleeve. “Are we still teasing that #DiabloIV thing tomorrow night?” Fergusson tweeted at Diablo marketing director Daniela Rodriguez, “People are going to be really surprised”.

Well isn’t that exciting? The rumour-mill immediately sped up. Obviously, Fergusson was going to announce the sudden addition of Diablo’s paladin class for the fourth game’s launch. Or no, wait, he was going to announce that the game would get its full release a few days early. Or maybe he’d just announce some kind of glittering cosmetic we could form another weird social hierarchy over? Players waited in anticipation.

You can imagine their disappointment when it turned out Fergusson was teasing a… hot, Diablo-themed collaboration between the music…

Elden Ring players may well have found Miyazaki’s secret ‘small element’ and turns out it’s had a clue to the DLC since launch-

Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is due for release in June and, alongside the recent trailer for what the developer says will be its biggest expansion yet, FromSoftware CEO and creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki went on the interview circuit. By far the most intriguing thing he said (well to me at least) was that, despite players poring over every inch of the Lands Between since launch, there remained “a small element that I feel has not yet been discovered.”

Putting that in front of the internet sleuths is akin to waving a red rag to a bull, and sure enough Elden Ring’s players seem to have delivered. Don’t ever expect Miyazaki to confirm whether this is what he was referring to but, as something that arguably couldn’t be understood until recently, it’s one hell of a candidate.

First spotted by redditor Cudakid210, an apparently unremarkable wooden shield is where this particular secret lies. The item is hidden behind an illusory wall in the S…

Grab yourself a 48-inch 4K LG OLED for a ridiculous $650-

Wait. There’s got to be a catch, right? Yes. This LG OLED A2 48 incher is a 60Hz screen, so there’s no high refresh action here. But then it’s also 4K, so the idea that you’re going to be watching Cyberpunk flash by at 240 frames per second is pretty fanciful.

In other words, this isn’t a screen for eports addicts desperate for low latency. To be honest, it’s not really a great pick as a multi-purpose monitor. At 48 inches it’s a bit too big for that. But if you want that OLED -per-pixel lighting experience with the full 4K thrown in, and from one of the best brands in the business, well, this isn’t a deal, it’s an outright steal at just $650 from Best Buy.

Anyway, the LG  isn’t even an ancient model, it’s a 2022 panel. However, it is LG’s value-orientated OLED model line and aside from the 60Hz thing, there are other, well, compromises.

Most obviously, this ain’t the brightest kind-of monitor du monde. You’re looking at a peak of around 550 nits in a sm…

I demand you stop what you’re doing and look at this cute Mac-shaped charger-

Have you ever seen a product that is so adorable you feel obligated to let everyone within earshot know? That’s happening to me right now. I came across this little cutie today, and I would be an absolute monster if I didn’t let the world know about this retro PC charger on sale at Drop for $32. I don’t know if I can get the word out to absolutely everyone, but I’d settle for, like, a billion people putting their eyes on this thing.

The Retro PC GaN Fast Charger is a 35W charger shaped like an adorable retro personal computer. I assume the name is as generic as possible to avoid any copyright attention from Apple, but the description on the product page says it’s modeled after an “old school Mac.” Of course, it has a little happy face on it.

The feature I really like is how the screen on the charger lights up different colors to let you know what kind of charge you’re getting (fast, slow, or normal). It also comes with a handful of transparent stickers that go on t…

Epic CEO Tim Sweeney says he’s open to Fortnite on Steam or ‘any serious store’, but that ‘the end of these ridiculous 30% fees’ is a requirement-

Fortnite (a game which by all accounts probably doesn’t need the help) could come to Steam, but on one condition: the platform does away with its 30% cut.

As spotted by Gamesradar, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney laid out the conditions for bringing Fortnite to the platform in a response to a Tweet, writing: “We’ll compete, and we’ll also put Fortnite on any serious store that gives all developers an awesome deal … the end of these ridiculous 30% fees is near.” Steam takes a 30% cut, so it’s a pretty obvious shot across the aisle.

While it’s a little funny that Sweeney is implying Steam isn’t a “serious store” here, it should be noted that he isn’t technically wrong. 30% is a high price for the privilege. Back in 2021, a state of the industry survey at GDC found that only 7% of respondents thought a 30% cut was justified.

However if Fortnite came to Steam, it likely wouldn’t be shelling out 30% of its profits for the privilege. If you’re a big earner,…

I’ve just been put to shame- Elden Ring- Shadow of the Erdtree player parries its final boss into the dirt like they’re Gwyn, Lord of Chumps-

I consider myself a middle-of-the-road soulslike player. When it comes to Elden Ring, I’m one of those stubborn people who doesn’t use spirit ashes or summons, and that self-destructive streak persisted for all of Shadow of the Erdtree. I like a good two-handed sword. I don’t (usually) wear a shield. I am a fan of a well-timed dodge roll—in summary, a Tarnished of simple pleasures.

After defeating most of the DLC’s bosses in my humble, honest-work fashion, its final boss proceeded to grab me by the scruff of my neck and give me the mother of all divine swirlies for around 13-15 hours of attempts over two days. We’re going to launch right into spoiler territory for it, now, though you probably knew that from the headline.

Promised Consort Radahn “made” me change up my build, swapping to a greatshield in order to deal with his barrage of faster-than-light nonsense. Many attacks, I reasoned, seemed borderline impossible to dodge. Only borderline

Intel may be about to out-AMD AMD in the budget CPU market-

The first rumored specs on Intel’s Raptor Lake refresh, aka the new Core 14000-series CPUs, are here, and according to this SWEclocker report (via Videocardz), the big winners this fall are going to be budget gaming desktop builders.

The Raptor Lake refresh is not considered a new CPU generation but rather an update for the existing Core i9, i7, i5, and i3 13000-series. Based on the leaked information, the most significant and intriguing update will be seen in the Core i5 14440F, which is said to be getting an increased core count.

The Intel Core i5 13400F was already our favorite budget gaming CPU, with 10 cores and 16 threads. Our review praised its gaming performance and competitive price of just under $300. It’s a fantastic choice for system builders looking to save cash.

If the rumor holds true, we can anticipate the arrival of the Core i5 14400F refresh with a substantial increase to 20 threads. Although it will still have six Performance cores, i…

Intel could match TSMC for chip transistor density later this year-

Intel’s struggles with its chip production technology are well documented. Its 10nm node was at least five years late and has since been rejigged and rebranded “Intel 7”. But according to Wikichip Fuse, Intel might be back right at the cutting edge later this year with its upcoming Intel 4 node.

Intel’s main competitor when it comes to banging out the world’s most advanced silicon is of course TSMC. Comparing process technologies across fabs is notoriously difficult. But pretty much everyone agrees that TSMC’s N5 node crams in more transistors per unit of chip area than Intel 7.

However, going by information put out by both Intel and TSMC, Wikichip Fuse reckons that it will be very much a dead heat when devices with chips made on Intel and TSMC’s next-gen nodes arrive later this year.

TSMC has had its own woes bringing its N3 process tech to market. In fact, such have been TSMC’s struggles, the company has ended up creating two entirely separate N3 nodes, known as …

Roguelike horror shooter Dead Estate will get its final update in October

Dead Estate is set to get one last update before development finishes, with the Goodnight Update set to release at the end of October. The Halloween release is fitting for the “gory, fast-paced, challenging rogue-like shooter with a heavy emphasis on horror.”

“After about a year of work on this update, we’re pleased to announce that we’ll finally be able to share it with all of you on October 28th!,” said developer Milkbar Lads in a Steam post. “The Goodnight Update is gonna be the final content update we release for Dead Estate EVER, so we really wanted to take some time and go all-out on this one.”

The highlight of the Goodnight Update will be new levels that make up an alternate ending route alongside many new character costumes, items, and weapons. It sounds like it’ll be a fitting, and fittingly huge, update to send off an indie that has been a constant presence in the action roguelike genre since its 2021 full release.

“In short, Goodnight includes four new…

Maxis canceled The Sims in the ’90s, but it was saved by an unlikely hero- Electronic Arts-

A world without The Sims is hard to imagine: countless virtual homes unbuilt, countless bizarre challenges unplayed, countless Sims untrapped in swimming pools without ladders. What kind of path would my life have taken if I hadn’t been able to pack the first game full of mods so I could watch Batman and Gandalf be roommates? It’s unthinkable, but it was nearly the world we got. In the late ’90s, Maxis almost axed The Sims—not once, but multiple times.

The story comes from Spore designer Chaim Gingold’s book Building SimCity: How to Put the World in a Machine, published last week by MIT Press. Through chronicling the design and creation of the gold standard city builder, Gingold charts the history of simulation games, and of the company that brought SimCity to the world. And in the late ’90s, Gingold writes, Maxis had canceled the project that would eventually become The Sims, nearly spelling an early death for the studio’s now-beloved series.

Nier creator Yoko Taro lost his freaky mask and replaced it with something even worse-

Nier creator and famously quirky game developer Yoko Taro has, as part of his personal brand, a giant grinning skeletal headpiece which he wears during public appearances. Or he had such a headpiece.

Taro is currently in Los Angeles attending the 2023 Anime Expo, and promoting his newest project Kamierabi. When it came time for his panel, he wasn’t dressed as fans have come to expect. This came about, per Taro, thanks to a bunch of drinking sessions between him and other creatives, which resulted in a drunk television producer losing the Emil head—an oversized recreation of the perpetually grinning spherical skull of one of Nier’s beloved characters—in a bar (thanks, GamesRadar+).

Despite the loss, Taro was not about to go on stage at Anime Expo and show his face. Appearing on a panel, Taro drew audience applause with his replacement disguise, which is kind of even more creepy than the Emil mask. It looks like a leprechaun, but one that’s been on…

Not the tease! Nicolas Cage may be in a Hideo Kojima game-

Hollywood maniac-in-chief Nicolas Cage is, it appears, getting into games in a big way. Last month brought the news that Nicolas Cage would play Nicolas Cage starring as Nicolas Cage in Dead by Daylight later this year, which was swiftly followed by a scene-stealing cameo at Summer Games Fest where Cage very sincerely told players that “I want you to know when you’re playing the Nic Cage survivor, I want you to know that we’re one, that we’re fused”.

Yuh huh. Well, a certain game director slash movie buff has clearly been watching all this with interest, and he wants a piece of the action. Hideo Kojima is a longtime fan of the actor and yesterday welcomed Cage to Kojima Productions.

That picture is so remarkable that I almost think it has to be an AI deepfake: but no, this is real life, Snake! Note in particular that Kojima’s had this picture taken with the Ludens mascot, which (among other things) represents the studio’s goal of creating new forms of play.…

Red Dead Redemption fans turn their ire against Rockstar after bewildering PS4 port choice- ‘Rockstar is Dutch and we’ve all become Arthur’-

After months of speculation, the Red Dead Redemption remaster/remake saga hit a damp squelch of an anticlimax yesterday afternoon, when Rockstar proudly announced it was porting the basic version of the original PS3 and Xbox 360 game, plus its Undead Nightmare DLC, to the Nintendo Switch and PS4. For $50, no less. Fans were upset.

Fans continue to be upset, actually. Red Dead community hubs have gone into full-on mutiny mode, trading memes that excoriate and mock Rockstar’s decision-making and encouraging one another to boycott the port entirely.

“Do not buy Red Dead Redemption,” reads the title of a much-upvoted and awarded thread in the subreddit all about Red Dead Redemption. Its author, dtv20, explains their reasoning thusly: “It’s a $50 port of a 13 year old game” with “no graphical enhancements. No FPS enhancements” and “no multiplayer.” “Don’t buy this cash grab,” they conclude.

I’m always wary of the phrase “cash grab,” which is usually used to paper over h…

Steam’s second most-wishlisted game puts out bizarre set of ‘revelations’ ahead of release- ‘Please don’t accuse us of scamming; that’s not true’-

Some time in the 14th century, an English anchoress named Julian of Norwich beheld a series of visions of Christ’s passion while mortally ill, after which she miraculously recovered. Eventually, she would write her visions up into the Revelations of Divine Love, a groundbreaking work of mystical theology that would come to be regarded as a classic.

Anyway, it’s got a sequel now, in the form of “Revelations from Fntastic,” an incredibly odd PR statement in a long line of incredibly odd PR statements from the studio behind The Day Before, the zombie survival MMO (and Steam’s second most-wishlisted game) that had go into deep freeze after it drew the ire of a calendar app.

Although the game’s survival (and even existence) has looked questionable at various points over the course of this year, it’s set to finally release this Thursday, December 7. Ahead of that, Fntastic has put out a statement aiming to address, well, a whole bunch of vaguely defined groups, from futu…
